Petaling Jaya Lantern Festival 2010: Fun night of cultural shows, colourful floats and lantern parade


In conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival, Petaling Jaya City Council (Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya) got together with Cempaka Buddhist Lodge in Section SS23 Taman SEA and organized the first-ever Petaling Jaya Lantern Festival 2010 (Pesta Tanglung Petaling Jaya 2010) for all residents on Saturday 25th September.

Thousands of residents from all races and all walks of life attended the event and each received goodie bags containing the delicious traditional mooncakes and paper lanterns.

It was a grand celebration with the presence of two Selangor state executive councillors YB Ronnie Liu and YB Teresa Kok who officiated the event which received an overwhelming response from residents.

Also present at the event were Chief High Priest of Malaysia Venerable Reverand K. Sri Dhammaratana Nayaka Maha Thera who is also the Chief Abbot of the Buddhist Maha Vihara Temple in Brickfields, MBPJ councillors and officials.

It was a fun night out for the residents who were entertained with cultural shows such as dance performances by students and MBPJ cultural troupe, wushu demonstration, mask-changing act and other cultural performances.

The highlight of the celebration was the 3.5 km lantern parade where residents were led by Selangor state exco YB Teresa Kok and accompanied by colourful and brightly-lit floats, stilt walkers, lion dance troupes and convoy of mini cars that make their way through Jalan SS23/25, SS24/1, SS23/17, SS23/13, SS24/10 and back to SS24/1 and SS23/25.

The street lights along the lantern parade routes were decorated with brightly lit red lanterns.

The festive event was held to strenthen unity and promote social integration among Petaling Jaya residents in line with Local Agenda 21 (LA21).
