PM Najib’s second year visit to Batu Caves for Thaipusam


A floating crowd of over 1 million Hindu pilgrims, visitors and foreign tourists thronged the Sri Subramanian temple complex in Batu Caves for Thaipusam celebration on Thursday 20th January 2011.

Among the VIPs present was Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who made his second year visit to Batu Caves for Thaipusam under heavy police security including the presence of Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) riot police squad.

The prime minister hailed the Thaipusam festival as a celebration of the country's multiculturalism.

A giant-size cardboard cut-out of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was put up at the entrance to Sri Subramaniar Swamy temple complex at Batu Caves.


There was a significant police presence. The Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) riot polic squad formed a police cordon around Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib during his visit to Batu Caves for Thaipusam.

The carrying of a kavadi is a demonstration of devotion and thanksgiving to Lord Muruga during Thaipusam, especially by devotees whose prayers have been answered.


The 140-feet ( 42.7 metres) high statue of Hindu deity Lord Murugan by the foot of the 272-steps to Batu Caves. It is the tallest in the world.


The sight of the enormous golden Lord Murugan statue against the backdrop of the limestone hills was a sight to behold. Malaysian Hindus regard Lord Murugan (also known as Lord Subramaniam) as a manifestation of valor, beauty, youthfulness, vitality, masculinity and happiness.


Thousands of Hindu devotees, visitors and tourists climbed up the 272-steps that lead to the Sri Subramaniam temple in Batu Caves.


No pain: A devotee had his tongue and cheek pierced with skewers during the Thaipusam festival at Batu Caves. Amazingly, there is no blood, no tears, and no moaning!

.... and on his both legs as an act of faith and atonement to honour Lord Murugan.

Devotees pray to Lord Murugan for divine help and many have had their prayers answered.


When their prayers are answered, they return on Thaipusam to fulfil their vows and pay penance to Lord Murugan.

There were more than 400 booths selling food, drinks, clothing, souvenirs and services. However some Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) such as the Hindu Sevai Sangam (above) distribute free food for everyone.


The Pakatan Rakyat Selangor booth distributes free mandarin oranges to everyone.
