The inaugural Citizen Journalist Conference 2010, timed in conjunction with World Press Freedom Day on May 3, is the largest gathering of citizen journalists from all across Malaysia.
The two-day conference from May 1 - 2 at The Annexe Central Market in Kuala Lumpur brought more than 100 citizen journalists to learn more about journalism and reporting.
As part of the conference, various workshops were held to train these citizen journalists (or CJ) to report responsibly, ethically and professionally for the betterment of the community.
The workshops were divided into three groups; Freshies (those undergoing citizen journalism for the first time); Basic CJ training and Advance CJ training.
On the first day of conference, guest-of-honour Subang Jaya state assemblyperson Hannah Yeoh officially launched the news portal Komunitikini initiated by Malaysiakini.
The new community portal focuses on local community issues whilst Malaysiakini offers alternative news and views on national issue.
Currently there are over 180 citizen journalists (CJ) who had undergone training by Malaysiakini since the launch of citizen journalism in Malaysia about two years ago. During the period until now, they had produced over 800 videos that had hit 5.7 million views. A great achievement by any standard.
