Bloggers from Asean region meet together at the first Malaysia-Asean Regional Bloggers Conference held from 23 – 24 April 2011 with the theme of "Blogging Mindfully and Responsibly" at Intercontinental Hotel (formerly Nikko Hotel) in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak officially opened the conference on Sunday 24th April 2011. He called on the blogger community to speak the truth in cyberspace or expose themselves to all the ramifications and consequences for telling lies and half-truths.
Also present were the patron of Blog House Malaysia (BHM) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, Najib's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and Blog House Malaysia (BHM) president Syed Akbar Ali.
The two-day conference which attracted more than 250 participants was organized by Blog House Malaysia (BHM), an association that provide a platform to derive defensive mechanisms to protect the plethora of bloggers in blogosphere, especially on Malaysia and Malaysia-centric postings.
The objective of the conference was to bring together regional bloggers from ASEAN countries, and to highlight the obstacles faced by these bloggers as well as the adversity that bloggers might experience in their day to day talking of various issues.
Workshops and forums covering wide ranging topics including blogger network and blogger etiquette were held. Asean bloggers at the conference came from Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei and the Philippines.
The Asean bloggers adopted the five-point Kuala Lumpur Consensus on blogging and social media which among others, proposes the establishment of ASEAN Social Media and Blogging network to promote understanding, good relations, unity and co-operation for regional betterment and progress of the new media practitioners in the spirit of mutual respect.
