Tuesday 15th December 2009 and the night was raining but the rain stopped at Jalan Bukit Bintang area just before the official launch of the Kuala Lumpur World Marching Band Competition (KLWMBC) 2009 at 8.30 pm by Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Senator Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.
The low rumbling of distant thunder could still be heard and the occasional flash of lightning seen…. elsewhere in the city it was still raining as Mai Tomyam was told.
Mai Tomyam was amused when informed that the officials had taken an unconventional approach by hiring a bomoh (shaman) to help keep the rain away. That worked!
The dark clouds drifted away from Jalan Bukit Bintang area and the sky above was clear for the official launch ceremony which was attended by more than 5,000 people who witnessed the colourful launch that was all fun and excitement for everyone as guests, tourists and shoppers watched a splendid show of fascinating cultural performance, dynamic act by singer, songwriter and composer Aizat Amdan, spectacular fireworks display and marching band parade featuring competing marching bands.
The night's festivities went on smoothly when small drops of rain soon began to fall during the marching bands parade but it soon disappear a short while later. Great job Mr Bomoh!
Jalan Bukit Bintang in front of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur was closed to all traffic during the launch at 8.30 pm. Two makeshift grandstands were built, one each in front of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur for VIP guests and another in front of Grand Millennium Hotel for everyone.
Close to 20 marching bands from 12 countries are vying for the glory of being crowned KLWMBC Champion of 2009 - the most prestigious international marching bands competition in the South East Asian region.
The live marching bands competition and drumline battle is held over three days, on 16th, 17th and 19th December 2009 at Stadium Bolasepak Kuala Lumpur in Cheras and at Berjaya Times Square in Jalan Imbi.

Cambodia is participating for the first time this year. The band called the Wat Phnom Sakura Marching Band is from Phnom Penh. Their trip here is fully sponsored by Present Malaysia Productions Sdn Bhd who is the event organizer and the custodian of the KLWMBC annual event.
