Joyous 1Malaysia National Ponggal (or pongal) celebration in Brickfields - the Little India of Kuala Lumpur


A big crowd from all walks of life and different races attended the first 1Malaysia National Ponggal (pongal) Celebration that was held on a street next to the open car park opposite Palm Court apartment in Brickfields Kuala Lumpur on Sunday 17th January 2010.

Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin launched the event.

Mai Tomyam is happy to take part in the joy and merriment in the traditional Indian celebration.

About 500 participants comprising mostly family members participated in the cooking of the Ponggal rice in claypots at the celebration. Many gathered to witness the pot boiling over with the rice and milk spilling from the claypot signifying that one’s home is blessed and that the family can look forward to prosperity.

The rice was sponsored by Serba Wangi Sdn Bhd and the free flow of Enrico’s Indian Hi Top tea is sponsored by distributor Raviraj Sdn Bhd (RRSB).

Ponggal (Tamil: தைப்பொங்கல்) is a popular harvet festival celebrated by Tamils as a thanksgiving to the sun god Sooriya Bhagawan, rain god Indra and all the farm animals that have helped to produce a bountiful harvest

In the true spirit of 1Malaysia, the Nasyid singers Salam (from left) Zaidi Rustam, 39, Muad'z Dzulkefly, 31, and Admad Fadzli Bakar, 33, sang a Hindi song Oli Thedum (Mencari Cahaya) that had the crowd in enraptured.


Nasyid singer Zaidi Rustam of Salam captivated the audience with his singing prowess and vocals.

National MIC information chief P. Kamalanathan welcomed everyone to the first 1Malaysia National Ponggal Celebration and hoped all Malaysians would take Ponggal as Malaysia's very own thanksgiving festival.


Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister YB Senator Raja Nong Chik bin Raja Zainal Abidin said he was pleased with the multi-racial turnout of the crowd and his ministry would do everything within its means to promote Brickfields' Little India to all the tourists.
